Session 2: December 15, 2020
Session 3: January 21, 2021
Location: Webinar

COURSE DESCRIPTION & OVERALL GOAL
Persons who apply for U.S. permanent residence status from within the U.S. are required to complete a standardized medical examination that include immunizations and screening for infectious diseases. “Civil Surgeons” are the doctors authorized by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to document the completion of these requirements on the Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record (Form I-693). There have been recent updates made to the I-693 form and several CDC technical instructions. The purpose of these trainings are to discuss best practices for immunizations and screening for infectious diseases, and provide civil surgeons with an update on changes to the I-693 form, and updates to the CDC technical instructions for tuberculosis, immunizations, STIs, mental health, and substance abuse.

WHY COURSE IS NEEDED
Recommendations and best practices related to screening and medical evaluation for tuberculosis and other infectious diseases conducted by civil surgeons have changed in recent years. Civil surgeons may not be aware of recent changes and revised technical instructions and, thus, may not be implementing these recommendations in their practice. This educational activity will provide civil surgeons with an overview of updated information on the TB technical instructions, review best practices for the screening and treatment of other infectious diseases and mental health disorders, and provide a forum for civil surgeons discuss complex case scenarios and receive input from experts.

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this conference, participants should be better able to:

Session 1:

  • State the purpose of the CDC technical instructions and the role they play in the medical clearance process for applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States.
  • List the most recent updates to the USCIS I-693 Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination form in order to assist civil surgeons in completing the form for status adjusters.
  • Explain recent updates to the technical instructions for tuberculosis, including clarifications on laboratory testing procedures and the role of civil surgeons while interacting with health departments.

Session 2:

  • Implement the preferred diagnostic and treatment options for gonorrhea and syphilis to ensure proper interpretation of tests and treatment of individuals seeking status adjustment.
  • Apply the CDC recommendations for accurately determining and addressing vaccination needs for applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States.

Session 3:

  • Utilize best practices for screening for mental health and substance abuse disorders for applicants seeking to adjust their immigration status in the United States, as cited in the CDC technical instructions.
