Alternatives to Efavirenz-Based Antiretroviral Therapy

• Alternative first-line treatment regimens include Nevirapine (NVP) in combination with triple Nucleoside Retro-Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs) - based on Tenofovir DF (TDF) or Abacavir (ABC) regimens.
• For NVP-containing regimens, ALT should be checked at 4, 8 and 12 weeks; treatment should be decided on the basis of symptoms thereafter.
• Standard protease inhibitor regimens, whether Ritanovir boosted or not, cannot be given with rifampicin.
• Recommended regimens change based on availability of new medications and new clinical data, so check most recent WHO guidelines.
