Mental illness can be one of the more overlooked comorbidities with TB disease. People with TB can face strong stigma both from their communities and also internally. Certain anti-TB drugs including isoniazid and cycloserine have been linked to mental health problems.

People with mental illnesses and substance use disorders are more likely to:

  • Be exposed to TB
  • Develop TB disease
  • Delay seeking care
  • Miss doses
  • Be lost to follow-up on treatment
