Support to improve treatment adherence can be divided into four categories:

  1. Informational support can provide training and education or help solve problems and address sources of stress. This support can be interpersonal, written or provided in audio or video formats.
  2. Emotional support is part of the process that contributes to strengthening the self-esteem of a patient through empathy, trust, encouragement and care, among others.
  3. Companionship support can help a person with TB feel part of a wider social group, possibly of current or former TB patients who can provide support in ways health care providers and family members may not be able. Patients with access, can use online communities or support groups, which are increasing available.
  4. Material support refers to all commodities, including incentives and enablers that a person with TB may receive to help complete treatment.
