Multi-drug resistance is defined as resistance to at least rifampicin and isoniazid, the two most effective anti-TB drugs. The emergence of resistance to medications used to treat TB, and particularly MDR-TB has become a significant public health problem in a number of countries and an obstacle to effective global TB control.
    • MDR-TB is now estimated to affect 3.5% of all new cases of TB and over 20.5% of previously treated cases globally.
    • WHO estimates that approximately 480,000 new cases of MDR-TB may emerge every year, with a global prevalence that may be as high as one million cases.
    • Just under 97,000 cases of MDR-TB were placed on treatment in 2013.
