In the early 1990’s the WHO developed and promoted an internationally-recognized strategy to prevent and control TB initially called DOTS.

DOTS was based on five key components

    1. Political commitment with increased and sustained financing
    2. Case detection through quality-assured bacteriology
    3. Standardized treatment with supervision and patient support
    4. An effective drug supply and management system
    5. Monitoring and evaluation system and impact measurement

In recognition of the evolving needs and challenges not addressed by the original DOTS strategy, the Stop TB Strategy was developed in 2006 to expand and enhance DOTS and meet existing and new global TB targets especially around drug resistance and HIV.
