Palliative care includes symptom management during both acute and chronic illness and end-of-life (terminal) care.

Palliative care can be used to improve treatment outcomes during care for patients who are taking failing drug regimens with no alternative options (such as MDR and XDR-TB patients in certain settings).

There are WHO guidelines for on palliative care in low resource settings.
