  • Any decision to stop treatment should be discussed with the patient and his or her family. To do so properly, home visits may be required and the process can take a period of time ensure that the patient understands the reasons and the implications.

  • Once a decision is made to end anti-TB treatment for failing regimens, care must be provided.

  • Non-medical approaches should also be incorporated. These can include psychological, spiritual and emotional support and counselling to help patients cope with guilt, fear of dying, anxiety and depression. Answering patients’ questions and explaining what is happening can also help relieve fear and anxiety.

  • Ensure that appropriate infection control measures are in place to prevent further transmission to family and caregivers. More information is available in Module 7.
