COURSE DESCRIPTION & OVERALL GOAL
In commemoration of World TB Day, this conference will address local efforts for the prevention and control of tuberculosis in the District of Columbia. Topics will include an overview of TB, TB diagnostics, the use of shorter regimens for treatment of LTBI, changes in reporting requirements, TB case management, and TB elimination.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This conference is open to providers and public health staff who are involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of persons with TB infection and TB disease.

WHY COURSE IS NEEDED
In order to make progress toward the goal of TB elimination, education of health care providers is paramount for maintaining clinical and public health expertise. Providers must be trained on diagnostic evaluation, recommended treatment, and management of TB. 

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this conference, participants should be better able to:

  • Review the pathogenesis of TB, classification systems, and the differences between LTBI and TB disease.
  • Recognize the epidemiology of TB in DC to make informed decisions about reporting and assessing TB.
  • Utilize TB nurse case management strategies and initiate contact investigation for confirmed TB cases.  
  • Implement short-course regimens to increase treatment completion among patients with LTBI.

CONTINUING EDUCATION INFORMATION

In support of improving patient care, this activity has been planned and implemented by Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and DC Health Department. Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.

PHYSICIANS: Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

NURSES: This activity is awarded 6.25 ANCC contact hours. Nurses should only claim those contact hours actually spent participating in the activity.
