TB Case Management for Nurses

COURSE DESCRIPTION & OVERALL GOAL
This interactive course will address specific aspects of nurse TB case management with a focus on practical application. Topics to be addressed will include an overview of TB nurse case management, person-centered care, interpretation of lab results, monitoring patients during therapy, TB contact investigations, infection control, and management of TB in special situations. The format will include pre-recorded and live sessions, interactive breakouts, and group discussions.

Live session dates: April 29, May 1, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The course is designed for nurses who are responsible for providing TB case management for patients with TB infection and disease. Nurses will be notified of acceptance into the course after their application is reviewed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be better able:

  • Apply a patient-centered approach to the prevention, case management and successful completion of treatment for TB in persons (both adults and children) with TB infection/ disease.
  • Discuss the role of TST/IGRAs, laboratory methods, and chest radiographs for the diagnosis of TB infection and disease.
  • Recognize adverse drug reactions to TB medications and monitor patients either to achieve treatment completion or develop appropriate interventions.
  • Define the nurse’s role in TB contact investigations, including the evaluation and treatment of identified contacts.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
In order to be accepted into this course, participants must complete all course requirements (attend 10 live sessions, complete required homework assignments, submit all required evaluations) and adhere to the time commitment needed to complete the course in its entirety. 

Technology: Participants will be expected to have access to a webcam or mobile device (e.g., tablet, smartphone), to turn on their video during the live sessions. A stable internet connection with access to external websites (not blocked by firewalls) is required.

Canvas: All participants will be expected to access the course content through the learning management system Canvas. After being accepted into the course, participants will receive further details on how to access the learning management system. Please note, participants may need to use a desktop computer or laptop to access Canvas rather than a tablet, iPad, or other mobile device.
