COURSE DESCRIPTION & OVERALL GOAL
This workshop for clinicians provides comprehensive information on the application of principles for the diagnosis and treatment of TB, as well as the management of TB in special populations. The goal is to enhance healthcare provider knowledge and skills in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of TB, promote networking among providers in the Northeastern region and encourage providers to consult TB experts when needed. Topics include transmission and pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment, drug resistance, TB-HIV co-infection, TB in children and adolescents, and key aspects of patient management. The format includes lectures, interactive discussions, and case studies.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
The workshop is designed for physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals who are involved in the diagnosis and management of TB patients. Individuals who work in the following settings would benefit from attending this workshop:

  • Immigrant & Refugee Health

WHY COURSE IS NEEDED
As the incidence of tuberculosis continues to decline, maintaining clinical and public health expertise in TB is particularly challenging. Therefore, ongoing training and education are important for healthcare providers to enhance skills in TB diagnosis, follow recommended treatment guidelines, and interact effectively with public health agencies. This type of training is also important for new clinicians working in TB control or other settings.

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be better able to:

  • Interpret epidemiologic trends to better screen and treat groups who are at high-risk for tuberculosis.
  • Apply the latest advances for assessing risk, testing, and treating TB infection to prevent development of disease.
  • Implement recommendations for prompt diagnosis, appropriate treatment and effective management of tuberculosis disease.
  • List approaches for addressing clinical and social challenges in the management of patients with tuberculosis to achieve successful outcomes.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
This course will build upon basic TB concepts. Prior to the course, it is recommended that participants review the CDC’s Core Curriculum on Tuberculosis: What the Clinician Should Know. In order to meet the learning objectives and receive continuing education credits, participants are required to attend the entire course and complete an evaluation form. A post-course follow-up evaluation will be sent within 3 months of the course.
