  1. Obtain an accurate medical history and complete a physical exam.

  2. Ensure all patients receive (or refer to appropriate services for):
    • A screening test such as a chest X-ray to determine further diagnostic testing is needed.
      And
    • Two good quality sputum samples for Acid fast bacilli (AFB) microscopy
      or
    • One good quality sputum sample for Xpert MTB/RIF

    Additional tests that may be used include:

    • M. tuberculosis culture, if available
    • Additional rapid or conventional drug susceptibility tests (DST), if available.

  3. Confirm or rule out TB, or refer the patient where a diagnosis can be made, as required.
