Obtain an accurate medical history and complete a physical exam.

Ensure all patients receive (or refer to appropriate services for):
- A screening test such as a chest X-ray to determine further diagnostic testing is needed.
And

Two good quality sputum samples for Acid fast bacilli (AFB) microscopy
or
-
One good quality sputum sample for Xpert MTB/RIF
Additional tests that may be used include:

M. tuberculosis culture, if available
-
Additional rapid or conventional drug susceptibility tests (DST), if available.

Confirm or rule out TB, or refer the patient where a diagnosis can be made, as required.
