In this module, you have learned that..

  • Many non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, silicosis, COPD, and certain types of cancer increase the risk of developing TB. Other conditions such as smoking, alcohol or drug dependency and malnutrition and immunosuppressive therapy such as TNF alpha inhibitors put people at higher risk for TB. Anyone belonging to one of these groups may merit more intensive screening efforts.

  • Any person who presents with signs or symptoms suggestive of TB, in particular a cough of long duration should be evaluated and receive screening and diagnostic tests for TB disease.

  • Other symptoms that are consistent with TB are hemoptysis, night sweats, fever and/or weight loss.
