In most countries, TB is a notifiable disease and must be reported to the local TB control program. Proper case reporting:

  • Helps determine resource needs
  • Measures the effectiveness of the TB control strategy
  • Allows proper tracking of TB within the population as a whole, not just the population served by the NTP

Appropriate recording and reporting further permits individualized follow-up to help patients who are not progressing.
Note that TB cases diagnosed with Xpert MTB/RIF or future WHO recommended tests should be reported as bacteriologically positive under the new reporting guidelines.
