Smear Microscopy

Although microbiological diagnosis is confirmed by culturing M. tuberculosis (or, under appropriate circumstances, by identifying specific nucleic acid sequences in a clinical specimen) in many settings neither method is available or feasible.

In such circumstances TB diagnosis may also be confirmed by the presence of AFB in sputum smear specimens as it is highly specific for the M. tuberculosis complex, especially in high TB prevalence settings.
